Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Ruwan Senarath said the government will import 2,000 cab vehicles early next year to provide transport facilities for heads of state institutions.

He said the move aims to enable officials, particularly those in local government bodies, to reach grassroots communities and implement development projects more effectively.

“We need to give officers the ability to move around and get to the villages. That is why we decided to bring down 2,000 cabs during the first quarter of next year. This will help officers engaged in field duties to carry out their responsibilities efficiently,” the Deputy Minister said.

He added that machinery and other equipment will also be allocated to strengthen grassroots operations, with funds already set aside for the initiative.

Meanwhile, Senarath said the government has reactivated several inactive local government institutions and launched new projects aimed at reducing rural poverty.
