Three officers from the Chankanai Excise Office have been arrested by the Northern Provincial Crime Division for allegedly attempting to obtain a Rs. 2 million bribe while posing as officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau.

The arrests were made during a raid carried out following an intelligence tip-off received by the Northern Provincial Crime Division.

Police said the suspects had apprehended a man at a beach in the Madagall area, claiming he was connected to theft, and later falsely identified themselves as officers of the Narcotics Bureau. The man was then taken to the Chankanai Excise Office, where the officers allegedly called his sister using his mobile phone and demanded Rs. 2 million for his release.

The woman reported the matter to the police, leading to the sting operation and arrest of the suspects.

The accused are a Chief Excise Officer and two officers, aged 48, 36, and 32. They are scheduled to be produced in court.
