The Sugathadasa Stadium Authority has announced that athletes will not be allowed to train at the stadium for ten days from August (30). The closure is due to preparations for the Jehovah’s Witnesses International Convention, which is expected to attract over 14,000 participants, including 3,500 foreign delegates.
With tents already being set up on the track, athletes have raised concerns as Sugathadasa is one of only two synthetic tracks in Sri Lanka. Sports circles recall that similar issues arose during the 2018 convention, despite earlier assurances that the venue would not be given for non-sporting events again.
Criticism has mounted over the Sports Ministry’s priorities, as national-level competitions are still being held on grass tracks while the country’s premier athletics venue is reserved for religious use.
