Court orders CID to expedite Uddika Premaratne shooting probe

Anuradhapura Additional Magistrate P. H. W. D. L. Samarasinghe directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take prompt action to obtain the Attorney General’s (AG) instructions regarding the shooting incident involving the vehicle of former Anuradhapura District MP Uddika Premaratne.
The order was issued when the case was recalled in court. The CID informed the court that the investigation extracts had been sent to the AG on February 17, but instructions were yet to be received.
Attorney Ranjith Rajakaruna, appearing for former Anuradhapura Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sanjeewa Mahanama — a suspect in the incident — argued that his client has suffered serious prejudice due to the prolonged delay in receiving the AG’s directions.
Mahanama, previously arrested on suspicion of involvement in the shooting, was remanded and later released on bail.
