Western Province has launched initial trials of fully electric, solar-powered waste-collecting boats on the Beira Lake, Governor Hanif Yusoof announced.

According to the Governor, each boat has the capacity to collect up to 3,000 kilograms of floating solid waste per day. As part of the initiative, up to four such boats are expected to be deployed in the near future.

This marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to restore and revive the historic Beira Lake, which has long faced pollution challenges. The introduction of eco-friendly boats is expected to contribute both to waste management and environmental sustainability in Colombo.
