Five notorious Sri Lankan organized crime gang leaders, including Mandinu Padmasiri alias Kehelbaddara Padme, attempted to bribe Indonesian police with 10 million rupiah (about LKR 2 million) during their arrest in Jakarta, but officers refused the offer and took them into custody.

The suspects — linked to multiple murders, including the Ganemulla Sanjeewa killing, and large-scale drug trafficking — were captured in a week-long joint operation by the Sri Lanka Police and Jakarta Police.

Acting on intelligence, a special team led under the supervision of IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya and Senior DIG Asanka Karawita deployed ASP Rohan Olugala and ASP Mahinda Jayasundara to Indonesia, where they endured harsh conditions, sometimes eating only once a day and sleeping on sidewalks during surveillance.

After fleeing from one luxury housing complex, the suspects moved to another location 7 km away, taking a 60 km detour to avoid detection. Police raided the second property this morning, arresting Kehelbaddara Padme, Commando Salintha, Kudu Nilanga, and two others — Backo Saman and Tambari Lahiru, accused of killing a person named Kaja and his two children. Backo Saman’s wife and three-year-old child were also detained.

The suspects are expected to be brought back to Sri Lanka soon.
