Kachchativu Island belongs to Sri Lanka and will continue to remain under Sri Lanka’s sovereignty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cabinet Spokesman, and Minister of Foreign Employment and Tourism, Wijitha Herath affirmed today.

The Minister made these remarks while addressing the media briefing held at the Government Information Department this morning (27), to announce decisions taken at the weekly Cabinet meeting.

He further stressed that neither the central government of Sri Lanka nor any diplomatic authority has taken a decision to cede the Kachchativu Island to India.

Commenting on recent statements made in Tamil Nadu, Minister Herath noted that Indian politicians often raise the Kachchativu issue during election campaigns in southern India. He said similar claims had been made in the past as well, particularly during election seasons, to attract voters.

The Minister reiterated that Kachchativu is and will remain a Sri Lankan territory today, tomorrow, and in the future.
