The Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation has announced that medical certificates required for obtaining driver’s licences will soon be issued through a digital system.
At present, these certificates are provided in printed form by the National Transport Medical Institute (NTMI) in Nugegoda, a process which officials have admitted is prone to irregularities and procedural lapses.
The introduction of the digital system aims to minimize such issues and ensure greater transparency.
Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne, together with Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku, recently inspected the Werahera Branch of the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT). During the visit, they highlighted shortcomings in the current process and emphasized the importance of moving towards a more secure and efficient digital framework.
The ministry stated that the new system is expected to streamline operations while reducing the possibility of malpractice.
