A special police team has been deployed to protect Additional Solicitor General and President’s Counsel Dileepa Peiris after intelligence revealed a plot by organized criminals hiding in Dubai to harm him.
Police said the decision was taken on the orders of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya, following information received on Saturday night (23). The intelligence indicated that the threat targeted Mr. Peiris, a senior Attorney General’s Department lawyer who has represented the state in several high-profile and controversial cases.
The special unit from the Police Special Task Force (STF), trained in VIP protection, has been assigned to provide security at his residence and during his travel since yesterday (24).
