Massive 120-foot asteroid is approaching Earth today at a speed of 28,482 mph

How close will asteroid 2025 QK3 come?
NASA confirmed asteroid 2025 QK3 is heading towards Earth. The rock is nearly 120 feet wide in size. It is travelling at a speed of 28,482 miles per hour. The asteroid will pass Earth on 26 August safely. Its closest distance will be 2,790,000 miles away.
Does this asteroid pose any real threat?
Experts say there is no danger from 2025 QK3. The rock belongs to the Aten group of asteroids. This group is known for crossing Earth’s orbit regularly. NASA marks objects hazardous only under strict conditions. A rock must come within 7.4 million kilometres distance. It must also be wider than 85 metres across. 2025 QK3 does not meet those risk conditions.
Why do scientists track even harmless asteroids?
Even safe flybys matter because orbits can change suddenly. A small shift may alter the entire future path. That is why global space agencies keep watch closely. They ensure data is updated and trajectories remain checked.
ISRO Chairman S. Somanath shared future exploration plans recently. He spoke about studying bigger rocks like Apophis in 2029. He also hopes to work with NASA and ESA. Collaboration with JAXA is also part of these goals. India plans to send missions landing on asteroids directly. These missions will collect samples and study them in detail.
