The Attorney General has told the Supreme Court that the proposed Presidents’ Entitlements (Repeal) Bill will not affect the pension rights of former Presidents guaranteed under the Constitution.
Appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, Solicitor General Viraj Dayaratne explained that the Bill is intended to reduce additional privileges currently granted to former Presidents and their widows under the Presidents’ Entitlements Act, No. 4 of 1986.
His statement came during the hearing of seven Special Determination petitions challenging the constitutionality of the proposed Bill.
The case was taken up before a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, Justice Achala Wengappuli and Justice Sampath Abayakoon.
