A traffic Police Sergeant attached to the Ja-Ela Police Station was arrested by officers of the Bribery Commission for allegedly soliciting a Rs. 15,000 bribe from a motorcyclist.
The arrest followed a complaint made by a resident of Ekala, who claimed the officer demanded the bribe after charging him with crossing a closed railway gate on August 6.
The complainant said the officer confiscated his driving licence and promised to return it and avoid court action if the bribe was paid.
The Bribery Commission officers carried out a sting operation around 5.35 p.m. at the Ja-Ela Traffic Division, leading to the officer's arrest.
The arrested suspect was produced before the Wattala Magistrate’s Court and was remanded until September 4.
