Former President Maithripala Sirisena today (24) urged all political parties to put aside their differences and unite to protect the freedom of the people and Sri Lanka’s democratic system.

Speaking at the joint opposition press conference in Colombo, held after the arrest and remand of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sirisena stressed that this was not a time for division but for collective action.

He acknowledged the hardships faced by politicians, noting that imprisonment has often been part of political life, and described Wickremesinghe’s remand as unfortunate but not unusual.

Sirisena also called on opposition parties and legal professionals to make every effort to secure Wickremesinghe’s release through democratic means.
