Postal workers who were on strike have agreed to end their trade union action from 4 p.m. today (24) and resume duties as scheduled, Minister of Mass Media and Postal Services Nalinda Jayatissa said.

The Minister made this remarks following a special discussion held earlier today with representatives of the striking postal workers.

“There were two main demands presented, but from the beginning we made it clear that the government was not ready to discuss those. We are, however, prepared to discuss the remaining 17 demands,” Jayatissa said.

According to the Minister, all postal trade unions agreed to stop their trade union action and return to work. He urged workers to clear the backlog of letters and parcels that had accumulated over the six-day strike without delay.

However, some regular postal workers stated they would wait for a written confirmation of the agreements before making any final decision regarding the strike’s end.
