Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has warned that the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe poses a serious threat to Sri Lanka’s democratic framework.

In a statement, Kumaratunga described the move as a deliberate assault on democratic values, stressing that its consequences extend far beyond any individual or political party.

She said the development undermines the rights of the wider society and called on all political leaders to unite against such actions.

Expressing her “unreserved opposition” to what she sees as attempts to erode democracy, Kumaratunga urged collective resistance to safeguard the country’s democratic principles.
