Representatives from all opposition political parties held a joint media briefing in Colombo this morning, opposing the legal action taken against Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The briefing was attended by Former President Maithripala Sirisena, Namal Rajapaksa, Wajira Abeywardana, Sagala Rathnayaka, Prof. G. L. Peiris, Harin Fernando, Patali Champika Ranawaka, Rauff Hakeem and several other party leaders and ex-ministers.
A statement from Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, read out by UNP General Secretary Thalatha Athukorala, condemned Wickremesinghe’s arrest as a “grave threat to democratic institutions.” Prof. G. L. Peiris also stressed that Wickremesinghe remains legally innocent and questioned the necessity of his arrest.
While many opposition leaders expressed solidarity, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa did not attend the briefing, instead visiting Wickremesinghe at the National Hospital in Colombo earlier today
