Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is currently in remand custody, is to be transferred to the National Hospital in Colombo due to health concerns, prison authorities confirmed.
Sources said the decision followed medical assessments recommending specialist care that is not available at the prison hospital. Wickremesinghe, who was admitted to the prison hospital last night (22) after being remanded, is reported to be in an unstable condition.
A prison official said he was initially brought to the Magazine Prison, where doctors detected elevated blood pressure and sugar levels and recommended his transfer to the Welikada Prison Hospital. However, his blood pressure reportedly increased further by this afternoon.
Meanwhile, several politicians, including former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, visited the Welikada Prison Hospital this morning (23) to meet the former President.
