A police sergeant and a constable-driver attached to the Bambalapitiya Police have been remanded until August 25 over allegations of accepting a bribe of Rs. 30,000 from a Singaporean national.
A police sergeant and a constable-driver attached to the Bambalapitiya Police have been remanded until August 25 over allegations of accepting a bribe of Rs. 30,000 from a Singaporean national.
Colombo Additional Magistrate Pasan Amarasena issued the remand order today and directed prison authorities to produce the suspects for an identification parade on the same date.
According to investigators, the Singaporean was travelling in a three-wheeler when police stopped the vehicle and found two cigarettes in his travel bag. The officers allegedly told him he could face a Rs. 50,000 fine if the case was taken to court, before demanding Rs. 40,000 and ultimately accepting Rs. 30,000.
The suspects were arrested by Bambalapitiya Police and produced before court today.
