Excavations at a mass grave discovered within the Colombo Port premises have unearthed skeletal remains of at least 88 individuals.

The grave was first identified in July 2024 during construction work for the new elevated expressway. Excavations are being conducted under the supervision of Colombo Additional Magistrate Kasun Kanchana Disanayake, with archaeological expertise from senior professor Raj Somadeva.

Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara recently revealed that Sri Lanka has so far recorded 17 mass grave sites across the country.
