CID summons Ranil on state funds misuse
Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been summoned to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Friday in connection with an ongoing investigation into a foreign trip allegedly funded with public money.
The probe centres on Wickremesinghe’s visit to New York and subsequently to London, where he reportedly attended a university graduation ceremony. According to police, while the London leg of the trip was for personal purposes, it was financed using government funds.
CID sources estimate the total cost of the trip — which involved a 10-member delegation — at approximately Rs. 16.9 million.
As part of the investigation, the CID has already recorded statements from former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake and former Private Secretary Sandra Perera.
