Cabinet Media Spokesperson, Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, has appealed to the people of the Northern and Eastern provinces not to be deceived by what he described as distortions and false propaganda directed at the government and security forces.
His statement comes on the eve of a hartal scheduled to be held tomorrow (18), in response to the death of a 32-year-old man who allegedly attempted to forcefully enter the Shivanagar army camp in Mullaitivu, which is slated for evacuation.
“Investigations are underway into this incident. Three members of the military have already been arrested and produced before court. However, it seems that certain political groups are attempting to create unrest by misrepresenting the facts and spreading false information. Therefore, the people of the country should be mindful of the truth and act peacefully,” Minister Jayatissa said.
The hartal was called by the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) to protest the alleged killing of Edirmanasingam Kabilraj, whose body was recovered from the Muttaiyankattu Tank on August 9.
Both the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) have extended their support for the hartal organized by the ITAK.
