The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched investigations to apprehend six gunmen who allegedly served under former Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, widely known as Pillayan, over serious allegations of abductions, enforced disappearances, and shootings.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched investigations to apprehend six gunmen who allegedly served under former Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, widely known as Pillayan, over serious allegations of abductions, enforced disappearances, and shootings.
According to police sources, the information regarding the group surfaced during lengthy interrogations of Pillayan and former Eastern Provincial Council member K. Pushpakumar, also known as Iniyabarathi.
Based on these disclosures, CID officers arrested two suspects last week in connection with recent shootings in Madakalapuwa and Keselwatta, Colombo.
Investigators suspect that the armed group linked to Pillayan, which operated in the Eastern Province during 2007–2008, was responsible for a series of political assassinations, attacks on government officials, and the abductions of civilians.
The CID is continuing operations to trace the remaining suspects and to establish links between past incidents of violence and recent underworld-related shootings.
