The Sri Lanka women’s cricket team began their three-match T20I series against New Zealand in style, claiming a comfortable seven-wicket victory in the opening encounter held yesterday (14) in Christchurch.

Batting first in the night game, New Zealand were bowled out for just 101 runs in 18.5 overs. Emma McLeod top-scored for the hosts with 44 runs. Sri Lankan debutant Malki Madara produced an outstanding bowling performance, taking 3 wickets for just 14 runs.

In reply, Sri Lanka chased down the target in just 14.1 overs, losing only three wickets. Captain Chamari Athapaththu led from the front with a blistering unbeaten knock of 64 runs off 48 balls, which included 9 fours and 2 sixes.

This victory marks Sri Lanka’s first-ever T20I win on New Zealand soil. Previously, the two sides had met in three T20I matches in New Zealand, all of which Sri Lanka had lost.

With this commanding win, Sri Lanka have taken a 1–0 lead in the series.
