The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has announced its support for the hartal organized by the Illankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) in the Northern and Eastern provinces on Monday (18), to protest the alleged killing of a man by soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army.

The protest comes after the body of 32-year-old Edirmanasingam Kabilraj was recovered from the Muttaiyankattu Tank on August 9, two days after he and four others had reportedly been summoned to an army camp and severely assaulted.
In a statement, the SLMC condemned the incident, calling it a “brutal act” that highlights the “deep crisis of law and order within the very forces that are tasked with protecting the public.” The party stressed that the government’s failure to ensure accountability for such grave crimes has eroded public trust and endangered the lives of civilians.
The SLMC also expressed concern over the government’s decision to grant visa-free entry to tourists from Israel, noting that many of them are members of the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), which has been widely condemned for violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza.
“At a time when our own citizens are facing violence and injustice at the hands of armed forces, such policies send the wrong signal,” the SLMC added.
