According to preliminary findings, the incident occurred when the female health worker accompanied a young patient in an ambulance from a regional hospital to Gampola Hospital. The alleged assault took place on the return journey, in a deserted area, after the patient had been admitted.
Initially, the victim did not lodge a complaint with the police, reportedly due to threats made by the ambulance driver. However, Kandy District Health Services Director said that a departmental investigation into the matter is currently underway.
The health worker later filed an official police complaint at the Pupuressa Police Station on August 14.
Following the complaint, the police have referred the victim to the Gampola Hospital for a medical examination and initiated a formal criminal investigation.
