The Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Unlawful Assets Investigation Division has questioned former Minister and United National Party (UNP) Chairman Vajira Abeywardena, and former Governor and Chief Minister Maheepala Herath, in connection with an investigation into the alleged acquisition of assets beyond their declared income.

According to senior CID sources, this marks the second round of questioning for Maheepala Herath. The probe follows multiple complaints alleging that both individuals possess wealth and properties inconsistent with their known income sources.
It was reported that the investigation will extend to the assets of their close family members, based on information suggesting that some properties may be registered under relatives’ names to conceal ownership.
The questioning aims to determine any links between the properties currently under scrutiny and the two politicians.
In a related development, former Minister Piyasena Gamage was also questioned on Wednesday by the CID’s Unlawful Assets Division.
The CID said that it is currently investigating over 100 politicians and government officials in similar cases, including several former ministers and members of parliament. Most of these investigations are being handled by the Unlawful Assets Investigation Division.
