Coolie’ Creates History in US Premiere Sales Ahead of Global Release

Producer Sun Pictures revealed that Coolie has become the first Tamil film to cross $2 million in premiere pre-sales in North America, overtaking Vijay’s Leo, Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: I, and even Rajinikanth’s own Kabali (2016), which previously held the record with $1.9 million.
Announcing the achievement on social media, the production house posted:
Coolie varraan solliko! #Coolie is the First Tamil film to cross $2 million in premiere pre-sales in North America. #Coolie releasing worldwide August 14th.”
The milestone sparked massive celebrations among fans, with comments hailing it as a “Rajinikanth mass” moment. Supporters flooded timelines with remarks like “All set mighty box office records,” “Thalaiva Rampage,” and “Record Maker and Record Breaker #Thalaivar.” Some even predicted a ₹1000 crore global box office haul.
With just hours to go for its release, Coolie now tops the all-time US premiere sales list for Tamil films, surpassing Leo (2023), The GOAT (2024), Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022), and Jailer (2023).
About the Film
According to the British Board of Film Classification, Coolie follows “a mysterious man who takes a stand against a corrupt syndicate exploiting workers in a port town.” This film marks the first collaboration between Lokesh Kanagaraj and Rajinikanth, fueling massive excitement in the industry.
The star-studded cast includes Nagarjuna, Nimma Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, and Aamir Khan in key roles. Set for release during India’s Independence Day holiday weekend, the film is expected to capitalise on both festive demand at home and the summer box-office window overseas.
The record-breaking US pre-sales underline not just Rajinikanth’s enduring global appeal but also the rapidly expanding market for Tamil cinema worldwide.
