
Priyantha Weerasuriya assumes duties as 37th IGP
Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police and Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya officially assumed duties this morning (14) as the 37th Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Sri Lanka, during a ceremony held at the Police Headquarters.
Addressing the assembly, IGP Weerasuriya emphasized his commitment to upholding the honor and dignity of the police service.
“My sole intention is to establish a disciplined police force. I will work to make this a reality in line with the vision of the Police Department, and I expect high performance and integrity from every officer,” the new IGP stated.
IGP Weerasuriya expressed gratitude to those who entrusted him with the role, acknowledging the support of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who appointed him to the position.
The official appointment letter was handed over on August 13 at the Presidential Secretariat by Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, following approval by the Constitutional Council in accordance with Article 61E(b) of the Constitution.
Notably, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya is the first Inspector General of Police in Sri Lankan history to have risen through all three entry-level ranks of the force: Police Constable, Sub-Inspector, and Assistant Superintendent of Police.
