Sri Lanka achieved its highest monthly foreign worker remittance figure for 2025 in July, with migrant workers sending USD 697.3 million to the country, according to Central Bank data. This represents a 19.5% increase compared to July 2024’s USD 566.8 million.

From January to July this year, total remittances have reached USD 4.43 billion. Over the same period, 173,189 Sri Lankans have left for overseas employment, including 106,229 men and 66,960 women.

Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) Chairman Kosala Wickramasinghe said the country is on track to receive USD 7 billion in remittances for 2025. He added that the Bureau has implemented various measures to deploy skilled and well-trained workers, with a target of sending around 300,000 Sri Lankans abroad by year’s end.

Wickramasinghe highlighted that under existing agreements, Sri Lankans are being sent to Japan, South Korea, and Israel, and praised the contributions of both licensed employment agencies and the workers themselves in strengthening the sector.
