In a bid to strengthen direct communication between the public and law enforcement, the Sri Lanka Police has introduced a dedicated WhatsApp number, allowing public to report crimes and other concerns directly to the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Police said it has been observed that there is a need to protect the rights of the public by giving priority to their needs and to inform the office of the Inspector General of Police directly about crimes and various other issues that the public encounters.
Police said the new initiative, announced by IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya is effective from August 13, 2025 and is intended to improve responsiveness and transparency within the police service.
According to police headquarters, the number, 071 859 8888 can be used by both members of the public and police officers to share text messages, photos, and videos related to criminal activity or other public safety matters.
However, voice calls to the number will not be accepted.
