Showers and Strong Winds Expected in Several Parts of Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has forecast showers in several parts of the island tomorrow (August 13), with certain areas expected to experience heavy rainfall and strong winds.

According to the forecast, showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara districts. The North-western province will experience several spells of showers. Fairly heavy falls exceeding 50 mm are likely in parts of Sabaragamuwa province and in the Nuwara Eliya and Kandy districts.

Showers or thundershowers may also develop in some areas of the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m. The Met. Department further warns of strong winds of 40-50 kmph at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, North-western, and Southern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee district.

The public has been urged to take precautions against possible damage caused by temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Sea Areas Forecast

Showers are likely at several places in the sea areas from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Winds will be south-westerly at speeds of 30-40 kmph, increasing to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coast from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times, while the seas from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle and from Kankasanthurai to Vakarai via Trincomalee will be fairly rough.

Naval and fishing communities have been advised to remain vigilant.
