The Cabinet has approved a proposal by the Minister of Power to begin the procurement process for developing floating solar power projects in Sri Lanka.
This move supports the government’s national priority to generate 70% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and achieve net-zero carbon emissions in power generation by 2050.
Under the Renewable Energy Resources Development Plan 2026–2030, reservoirs with the potential to produce up to 3,000 megawatts of floating solar power—based on 10% surface area use—have been identified.
The procurement process will involve calling for proposals from recognised firms to carry out pre-feasibility studies, feasibility assessments, and environmental impact evaluations.
