Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala revealed that 58 police officers have been suspended so far this year for involvement in drug-related offenses.

Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala revealed that 58 police officers have been suspended so far this year for involvement in drug-related offenses.

The Minister made this disclosure during a public program held in the Uva Province.

Ealier, the minister said that approximately 300 police officers have been suspended since January 2025 for various offenses. This marks a significant increase compared to 2024, when around 200 officers were suspended over the entire year.

Minister Wijepala expressed concern over the negative impact such misconduct has on the public image of the state service. He stated that the actions of a few have tarnished the reputation of many dedicated public servants.

He also noted that in some cases, state employees found guilty of serious misconduct have even lost their pension entitlements—despite serving in government roles for over 25 years.
