A sergeant and two corporals attached to the 12 Sinha Regiment at the Mutthiyankattu Army Camp in Mullaitivu have been remanded until August 19 in connection with the alleged killing of a young man who had visited the camp to collect scrap iron.

The suspects—Sergeant Deviranlage Chanaka Sampath Saman Kumara and Corporals Namal Kumarasiri Wanigaratne and Jayasinghe Peliyagedara Lasantha Chandrasiri—were produced before Mullaitivu Magistrate Dharmalingam Pradeepan.

The victim, identified as Adiramansingam Kapilraj, was reportedly assaulted after arriving at the camp with two others to purchase scrap material. His body was later recovered from the Mutthiyankattu tank by police.

According to police statements in court, Kapilraj may have jumped into the tank in an attempt to flee the alleged assault. The camp, which is due to be decommissioned, had reportedly instructed him to help clear scrap from the premises prior to the incident.

A tense situation arose when local residents gathered at the site of the body’s recovery to protest the killing. However, the crowd later dispersed after senior police officials assured them that a full investigation would be conducted and that appropriate legal action would be taken against the soldiers involved.

The Oddusudan Police are continuing further investigations into the incident.
