CID Summons Ex-Presidential Secretary Over Ranil’s UK Trip

Former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake has been summoned to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) this morning in connection with an ongoing investigation into a controversial overseas trip allegedly undertaken by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe using public funds.

The probe, detailed in a B-report submitted to the Colombo Magistrate’s Court in late June, centers on allegations that approximately Rs. 16.9 million in state funds were used for Wickremesinghe’s trip to the United Kingdom in September 2023. The visit was reportedly to attend a private event the graduation ceremony of the former President’s wife.

According to the CID report, Wickremesinghe had been on official visits to Cuba and the United States at the time. However, he is alleged to have diverted to the UK from the U.S., accompanied by a nine-member delegation, on September 22 and 23.

The investigation continues as authorities look into potential misuse of public funds and procedural violations related to the trip
