Due to the heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Kothmale region, two spill gates of the Kothmale Reservoir were opened on the afternoon of August 3, according to the Nuwara Eliya District Disaster Management Unit.

Authorities further stated that if the intense rainfall continues in these catchment areas, the remaining spill gates of the reservoir may open automatically. Therefore, residents living along both banks downstream of the Kothmale Oya are urged to remain vigilant.

Meanwhile, it has also been reported that water levels in the Castlereigh and Maussakele reservoirs are nearing spill level due to continuous rainfall in their respective catchment areas.
