The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather forecast indicating showers or thundershowers in several parts of the country today (August 2).

Rainfall is expected in the Northern, North-Central, Uva, Eastern, Central, and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in Kurunegala and Hambantota districts, particularly after 1:00 p.m. Fairly heavy showers exceeding 75 mm are likely in some of these areas.

Meanwhile, several spells of showers will occur in the Western Province and in the Galle, Matara, and Puttalam districts.

The public is advised to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Marine Weather Report

For the next 24 hours, the sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Matara via Galle will experience several spells of showers. Winds will be westerly to south-westerly at speeds of 30-40 kmph. However, wind speeds may increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Beruwala to Hambantota via Galle.

These sea areas are expected to be rough at times, with wave heights reaching up to 2.5 meters. Mariners and fishing communities are urged to exercise caution.
