Sri Lanka has welcomed the United States' decision to reduce reciprocal tariffs on Sri Lankan imports from 30% to 20%, following an announcement by President Donald Trump. Treasury Secretary Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma described the move as a positive step toward boosting trade, lowering costs, and improving market access.
Dr. Suriyapperuma emphasized that Sri Lanka, as a net importer particularly in energy, raw materials, and machinery—needs open and fair trade policies. He said the government is working to reduce restrictive tariffs and enhance pricing strategies, especially in the energy sector.
Highlighting a shift toward private sector-led trade with US suppliers, the Secretary also pointed to key reforms like the National Single Window system to simplify import-export processes. Reaffirming a zero-tolerance stance on corruption, he said Sri Lanka’s approach includes governance improvements and a drive to make the country a more competitive destination for global trade and investment.
