The Ministry of Digital Economy has announced that Sri Lanka will roll out a National Digital Identity (Digital ID) system by April 2026, with a strong focus on citizen privacy and data protection.

Funded by a Rs. 10.4 billion grant from the Indian government, the initiative is part of Sri Lanka’s broader Digital Economy Initiative aimed at transforming public service access and positioning the country as a regional digital hub by 2030.

The Digital ID will be built on the Modular Open-Source Identity Platform (MOSIP), already in use in countries like the Philippines and Morocco. A certified Indian system integrator will customize the platform for Sri Lanka, while local IT staff will be trained for ongoing operations.

To ensure security, all data collection will be handled by the Department for Registration of Persons, with no biometric data captured until the system is fully under local control. A full audit will be conducted by Sri Lanka CERT before launch, and all infrastructure will remain under government ownership.
