In a historic milestone for Sri Lanka’s public healthcare sector, the first childbirth resulting from in-vitro fertilization (IVF) conducted at a government medical facility was successfully carried out today (July 31).

The breakthrough was achieved through the Subfertility Center of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Kelaniya's Faculty of Medicine, which conducted the IVF procedure last year.

The baby was delivered via cesarean section at the Colombo North Teaching Hospital, Ragama.

Both the 31-year-old mother and the newborn are in stable and healthy condition, according to hospital sources.

This marks a significant advancement in making assisted reproductive technologies more accessible to the general public in Sri Lanka.
