The Ministry of Transport and Highways has announced that wearing seat belts in the rear seats of all light vehicles traveling on expressways will be mandatory starting tomorrow (August 1).

This new regulation aims to enhance passenger safety and reduce fatalities and injuries during road accidents. Authorities have urged all motorists and passengers to strictly adhere to the rule, emphasizing that non-compliance could lead to legal action.

Traffic Police and expressway monitoring units will be deployed to ensure enforcement from the first day. The Ministry stated that this move is in line with international road safety standards and forms part of broader efforts to promote responsible travel on Sri Lanka's highways.
