A tsunami is life-threatening. If you are near the coast or the mouth of a river, evacuate immediately. NHK has summarized the differences between tsunami warnings and advisories, and compiled tips for evacuation

Tsunami warning/advisory

Major tsunami warning (expected height over 3 meters): This warning was issued during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

Wooden structures will be completely destroyed and washed away. The risk of death is high for those caught in the tsunami currents.

Tsunami warning (1 meter to 3 meters): Flood damage will occur in low-lying areas, with a high risk of loss of life.

Tsunami advisory (0.2 to 1 meter): People at sea will be at risk of being caught in fast currents. However, people on land will be relatively safe as long as they do not approach the coast or the mouth of a river.
