Namal Rajapaksa Released on Bail After Surrendering to Court

The arrest warrant was issued yesterday (28) after Rajapaksa failed to attend a scheduled court hearing related to a case stemming from a protest held on October 6, 2017, against the Hambantota Port agreement with China.
Rajapaksa, who was named as the 35th respondent in the case, faces several charges including unlawful assembly, disobedience of court orders, causing public disorder, obstruction of official duties, damaging three jeeps, and setting fire to a section of a public road during the demonstration.
Reports indicate that Rajapaksa had travelled to the Maldives prior to the hearing and returned to Sri Lanka this morning (29) before surrendering to court.
Following his surrender, the Hambantota Magistrate granted him bail under previous bail conditions. The next hearing of the case is scheduled to take place on a future date yet to be announced.
