A large-scale beach cleanup program targeting key coastal tourist destinations in 14 districts was launched today with the participation of nearly 20,000 volunteers.

Organized by the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, the initiative kicked off with an inaugural ceremony at 7:00 a.m. on Kakadu Island under the theme "A Clean Coastline, An Attractive Tourist Destination."

The nationwide campaign aims to clean 253 coastal locations by noon today, enhancing the appeal of Sri Lanka’s beaches for both local and international tourists.

The Secretariat noted that this environmental effort brings together a wide range of stakeholders, including members of the tri-forces, police, Marine Environment Protection Authority, government and private sector institutions, civil society, environmental organizations, and local and foreign eco-enthusiasts.

“This collective effort reflects the growing awareness and commitment towards environmental preservation and sustainable tourism,” the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat stated.

Authorities emphasized that regular cleanup campaigns and increased public participation are crucial for maintaining the natural beauty and ecological health of the island’s coastlines.
