
Sri Lanka Launches National Sports Week with a Cycling Rally

Kicking off the week-long initiative, the inaugural event the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ cycling rally commenced this morning from the Reid Avenue area near the Ministry of Sports premises.
The rally attracted enthusiastic participation from cycling clubs, youth organizations, and members of the public, marking a symbolic beginning to the campaign.
This special Sports Week has been conceptualized under the guidance of Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, and is being held in parallel with the broader Clean Sri Lanka national initiative, highlighting the connection between physical wellbeing and environmental cleanliness.
The first day of activities continues this afternoon with a series of exciting events:
3:30 p.m. – A football match at the Torrington grounds
4:00 p.m. – A gymnastics competition
5:00 p.m. – Karate and Wushu demonstrations
The momentum carries forward into tomorrow (27 July) with a diverse program from 2:00 p.m. onwards, featuring:
Netball, volleyball, basketball matches
Roller-skating exhibitions
Traditional Angampora martial arts displays
Hockey matches
The final day of Sports Week, scheduled for July 31, will spotlight holistic fitness practices. A special yoga and exercise demonstration is set to take place at 4:00 p.m., followed by the release of a professionally-produced instructional video, designed by a team of fitness and health experts. This video aims to empower citizens with simple, effective workout routines they can do from home.
Through these events, the Ministry hopes to inspire long-term engagement in sports and physical activity, especially among the youth, and foster a cleaner, healthier Sri Lanka for all.
