Former Minister and senior parliamentarian Petikirige Dayaratna, a distinguished figure in Sri Lankan politics, has passed away at the age of 89, family sources confirmed.

Born on October 1, 1936, P. Dayaratna was a long-serving Member of Parliament representing the Ampara District. He began his parliamentary career in 1977, elected under the banner of the United National Party (UNP). Over the decades, he held several key ministerial portfolios and was widely respected for his contributions to national development and his steadfast commitment to the people of Ampara.

Dayaratna’s passing marks the end of a significant era in Sri Lankan politics, especially in the Eastern Province, where he was considered a pioneering political figure.
