A significant cache of arms and explosives has been uncovered in Vavuniya following intelligence provided by a suspect arrested in Kiribathgoda two days ago, police said.
he 22-year-old suspect was initially apprehended in possession of a T-56 assault rifle. Upon interrogation, he provided crucial information that led police to a hidden weapons storage site in Vavuniya.
Acting on the tip-off, officers conducted a search at a property where they discovered a barrel buried underground. Inside, police found 86 hand grenades and 321 live rounds of T-56 ammunition.
The suspect has been taken into custody, and further investigations are underway to determine the source and intended use of the recovered weapons. Authorities are also probing any possible connections to extremist or criminal networks.
