Parliament Approves Minimum Wage Increase and Budget Relief Amendments

Parliament today unanimously approved the Minimum Wages Bill, raising the private sector minimum monthly wage from Rs. 21,000 to Rs. 27,000 effective from April this year, with a further increase to Rs. 30,000 from next year.

Additionally, amendments to the Budget Relief Bill No. 4 of 2016 and No. 36 of 2005 were passed with a two-thirds majority, receiving 181 votes in favor and no votes against. Over 40 MPs were absent during the voting.
