Rough Seas Expected Around Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has issued a marine weather forecast warning of adverse conditions in sea areas around Sri Lanka over the next 24 hours.

Rainfall:

Showers are expected intermittently in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Wind Conditions:

Winds will be westerly to south-westerly with speeds of 35-45 kmph. However, wind speeds may increase significantly:

Up to 60-70 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast from Kalpitiya to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Hambantota onwards.

Up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota, and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaittivu.

Sea Conditions:

Rough to very rough seas are expected from Kalpitiya to Kankasanthurai via Mannar, and naval and fishing communities are strongly advised to avoid these areas for the next 24 hours.

Sea areas from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota, and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaittivu, may be fairly rough to rough at times. Mariners operating in these regions are advised to exercise extreme caution.

The Meteorology Department urges all naval and fishing communities to remain alert and follow future updates regarding sea conditions.
