A group of individuals were hospitalized on Saturday (20) after collapsing inside a beauty salon located in a multi-story building on Peradeniya Road, Kandy.

According to police reports, the incident occurred when the salon had closed all windows and doors to operate the air conditioning following a power outage. A generator had been activated inside the premises to restore electricity, leading to the suspected buildup of toxic fumes.

The situation came to light when an employee at a nearby shop noticed a young woman lying unconscious at the entrance of the salon. With the help of others, he managed to open the salon door, where they found six more young women and one man unconscious inside.

Emergency services were alerted, and the victims were rushed to hospital. Six individuals were admitted to the Kandy National Hospital, while two others were taken to a private hospital in the city.

Preliminary investigations revealed that four of the unconscious individuals were employees of the salon, while the others were customers receiving services at the time.

Police suspect that the cause of the mass fainting was due to inhalation of toxic smoke emitted by the salon's generator and air conditioning system operating in a poorly ventilated space. Further investigations are underway.
